The Grabenviertel used to be the craftsmen's district of Bodenwald who made use of the many small rivulets and side branches of the main river as a source of water power. However, thanks to the increasing industrialization of manufacturing most of these trades have become redundant and their businesses closed. A few of the more scenic areas have been restored to their former appearance and now house numerous restaurants and souvenir shops for the tourists. However, much of the district remains run-down, with more than a few abandoned buildings. This, together with the many ditches and the overall confusing layout of the district, has made the area perfect for people who want to hide things… or people. More than a few cellars contain hidden stockpiles, and credible rumors persist of secret markets for stolen goods.
