In feudal times, Westpforte was located just outside the city walls of Grüngarten itself, along the great trade roads leading to Praxus, Neuburg, and Bodenwald. Over time, several market places sprung up, which in turn lead to the construction of warehouses and more permanent trading posts of various merchant dynasties. Over time the city enlarged and swallowed this new district up, and the merchants gradually began to move elsewhere. While there are still numerous beautiful buildings from earlier centuries remaining in this district, the whole area has developed a rather seedy and run-down atmosphere and petty crime is rampant. However, the rents remain low, which has attracted a number of artists' colonies and small publishing houses, leading to hope for recovery in the future.
